I have a Canon MP830 and did the same as "briceg", except only onces. The Purge unit is on the right side. David if you are still having a problem I will be looking for a reaction in this blog. I packed it in padding and placed it in a hardside suitcase and brought it with me to Uruguay whereupon turning it on I am now at the point described above.
